Why I Became a Criminal Defense Attorney
People rarely encounter the criminal justice system at the best moment in their lives. An arrest or criminal charge can bring fear, uncertainty, and the feeling that everything is suddenly at risk.
Karl Swanson became a criminal defense attorney because he believes every person deserves to be heard and treated fairly within the justice system.
During more than 15 years working in criminal law in Albuquerque, he has seen the system from many perspectives. He spent nine years as a public defender protecting the constitutional rights of individuals accused of crimes.
He later served six years with the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office, helping lead justice reform and diversion programs designed to connect individuals struggling with addiction and other challenges to treatment and support.
These experiences reinforced a core belief: people are more than the worst moment in their lives.
